The Gods of Markshire

The Markshirian people follow a fairly tight belief that they can manage a lot on their own. However, they do hedge the odds by praying to an appropriate deity prior to moving forward.

For example, Ashimar is a Paladin of Tyr but understands that his god is most concerned with law so as Ash prepares to attempt to lift Barney's wagon up so Barney can slide his wheel in place he may ask Thor or Magni for the strength to succeed.

This is not a slight against his god. It is simply a matter of appropriateness.

How does this impact your character? Well, each individual may decide to follow the teachings of a single deity from the list or not have a favorite at all. Clerics and Paladins must choose a deity to specifically follow.

So we know who you follow or don't follow. What about the guy in the bazaar? Who does he follow? Well, he probably is wearing a medallion indicating his primary god. The majority of the denizens of Markshire (including Elves, Halflings, Dwarves, etc.) worship Odin primarily.

That doesn't mean that there aren't exceptions. It is a generalization.

The Ethos of Markshire

This is a sticky area since it revolves around a different axis of alignments. Most pantheons revolve around Good vs. Evil. Take half the deities and assign them to the goodie side and the other half to evil. This allows for a much more cut and dry division of who is doing what.

The Markshirian Ethos revolves around the opposite axis, Chaos vs. Law, which is a much more complicated concept to grasp. Ragnarok, or the final battle of the gods, is centered on maintaining the balance of these two Ethoses. If chaos begins to reign then the world slips closer to the end. If law holds supreme the same thing happens. Thus balance must be maintained.

The keeper of balance is Odin. Currently chaos has a heavy hold on Markshire. In order to maintain the balance Odin allowed Tyr to assist Markshire with guidance and the Enforcers among other things.

The balance is constantly in motion. The destruction of Arik shifted the balance far towards chaos and Thrym seized this opportunity.

The tale of Markshire the Persistent World: In the process of making this Neverwinter Nights world we considered all of the aspects of the Dungeons & Dragons fantasy world we created. The world is loosely based on Norse mythology and Viking culture. The deities of this world are not intimately involved with the adventures of the various heroes. Though the majority of the populace followed Odin there were some that followed Thor, Heimdal or even Loki and Hel.
The land to the east of the Thrym Mountains was a desert of frost and snow. There lived the Frost Giants. Ruled over by Thrym, Lord of Winter, the giants patrolled the desert and sought to break through Gastlinyk Gate. Gastlinyk Gate is a great city of our little kingdom. But Stonemark was the capitol of the land.
The kingdom of Markshire is comprised of all the various races; Elven, Gnomes, Dwarven, Halflings, as well as Humans. Our campaign allowed all classes; barbarian, cleric, druid, fighter, monk, paladin, ranger, rogue, sorcerer, and wizard.
Monster galore abound Markshire. We employed monster from titans to polar and grizzly bears or strange spiders to umber hulks and ancient wyrms. If the knights and mages weren't being killed by the monsters the ice and freezing winds were sure to do it. Our death system includes a direct trip to Elvidnir instead of Valhalla. There they visit with Garm and bargain for their souls.
